Artificial intelligence coupled with laboratory automation will transform how scientific work is performed
Thermo Fisher Scientific, a global leader in scientific solutions, has announced a major strategic collaboration with NVIDIA to bring AI-driven automation to laboratories at scale.
The partnership will integrate NVIDIA’s AI platform with Thermo Fisher’s lab solutions to boost automation, accuracy, and speed in scientific research.
The companies aim to revolutionize how laboratories operate by connecting scientific instruments, infrastructure, and data to AI-powered solutions. The goal: reduce manual steps and accelerate scientific breakthroughs.
“In most laboratories today, scientists still perform many tasks manually—from designing experiments and setting up instrumentation to preparing samples, running instruments, and interpreting results,” the companies said.
This collaboration promises to modernize these workflows, enhancing instruments with AI, linking labs and data to AI software, and empowering scientists to design, conduct, and analyze experiments more efficiently.
Thermo Fisher will combine its expertise in lab instruments and software with NVIDIA’s AI infrastructure—including NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD, and models such as NVIDIA NeMo and NVIDIA BioNeMo —to make scientific instruments more intuitive and interactive, democratizing access to next-generation discoveries.
“Artificial intelligence coupled with laboratory automation will transform how scientific work is performed,” said Gianluca Pettiti, Executive Vice President at Thermo Fisher.
“By combining Thermo Fisher’s leadership in laboratory technologies with NVIDIA’s digital and AI solutions, we can help customers work faster, improve accuracy and get more value out of each experiment, ultimately accelerating discoveries that can have significant human impact.”
Kimberly Powell, Vice President of Healthcare at NVIDIA, added, “We are entering the era of ‘lab-in-the-loop’ science where the trinity of AI, agents and instruments will be able to scale scientific discovery at industrial pace. Working with Thermo Fisher, we are building the fundamental infrastructure of autonomous labs, creating a powerful research and discovery flywheel accelerating the pace of life sciences breakthroughs.”
The collaboration reinforces Thermo Fisher’s role as a top provider of instruments, equipment, consumables, and services for life sciences. By integrating AI into laboratory workflows, Thermo Fisher’s ecosystem—together with other technology partners—aims to create a unified environment where data, instruments, software, and scientists work seamlessly, dramatically boosting lab productivity.
