Doctors say that while seasonal illnesses are common during the rainy months, many can be prevented through simple lifestyle measures

With the arrival of the monsoon bringing relief from the summer heat, healthcare experts are urging people to strengthen their immunity as the season also increases the risk of common infections.

Higher humidity, fluctuating temperatures and waterlogging create favourable conditions for bacteria, viruses and fungi, making respiratory illnesses, viral fevers, gastrointestinal infections, allergies and skin conditions more prevalent.

Doctors say that while seasonal illnesses are common during the rainy months, many can be prevented through simple lifestyle measures such as consuming a balanced diet, staying hydrated, getting adequate sleep and maintaining good personal hygiene.

According to Dr. Ketan Mehta, Consulting Physician, Cardio Pulmonologist and Diabetologist at Suchak Hospital and Asian Heart Hospital, Mumbai, the monsoon season brings a higher risk of infections due to changing weather conditions and increased exposure to germs. He said eating freshly prepared food, drinking clean water, maintaining good hygiene and following a nutritious diet can help strengthen the immune system and support overall health throughout the season.

Highlighting the nutritional aspect of immunity, Dr. Ankith Rai, Associate Director – Medical Affairs, Abbott India, said Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that supports overall health. Besides helping maintain a healthy immune system, it plays an important role in collagen production for healthy skin and provides antioxidant protection. Including Vitamin C as part of a balanced diet, he said, can support the body's natural defences and contribute to overall well-being.

Experts recommend incorporating Vitamin C-rich foods such as amla, guava, citrus fruits, tomatoes and bell peppers into daily meals during the monsoon. They also advise drinking clean, boiled water, eating freshly prepared food, remaining physically active and keeping the skin clean and dry to minimise the risk of fungal infections.

They further caution against consuming stale or improperly stored food, eating unwashed fruits and vegetables, excessive intake of deep-fried foods and allowing stagnant water to accumulate around homes, which can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Healthcare professionals emphasise that while no single nutrient can prevent illness, combining good nutrition with regular exercise, adequate rest and proper hygiene can help people stay healthier during the monsoon season, with Vitamin C serving as an important component of a balanced diet that supports immune and skin health.
