New annual observance aims to promote safe sun exposure, screening, and preventive healthcare as nearly 77% of Indians are estimated to be Vitamin D deficient

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), in collaboration with global healthcare company Abbott, has declared June 21—the longest day of the year—as ‘Vitamin D Day of India’, marking a significant initiative to raise awareness about one of the country's most prevalent yet often overlooked nutritional deficiencies.

The observance seeks to leverage the extended daylight hours on June 21 to highlight the importance of Vitamin D, commonly known as the ‘sunshine vitamin,’ and encourage individuals to adopt preventive health practices.

Despite receiving abundant sunlight throughout the year, India continues to face a high burden of Vitamin D deficiency. According to estimates cited by the initiative, nearly 77 per cent of the Indian population suffers from inadequate Vitamin D levels.

Experts attribute this paradox to modern lifestyle habits, including prolonged indoor work schedules, limited outdoor activity, use of sun protection products, and urban pollution that restricts effective sunlight exposure. Natural skin characteristics can also influence the body's ability to synthesize Vitamin D.

Health experts warn that Vitamin D deficiency often remains undetected due to the absence of obvious symptoms. However, low levels of the vitamin can lead to several health concerns, including weakened bones, muscle pain, fatigue, and compromised immune function.

Dr. Anilkumar J. Nayak, National President of the Indian Medical Association, said, “Declaring June 21 as Vitamin D Day is an important step in addressing a widespread yet under-recognized public health issue. As doctors, we witness the health impact of Vitamin D deficiency across age groups.”

Dr. Jejoe Karankumar, Medical Affairs Director for Abbott in India, said, “Vitamin D deficiency is common and often silent, yet over time it can weaken bones and affect immunity. Spending about 15–30 minutes in sunlight between 10 am and 2 pm can help the body naturally produce Vitamin D, depending on individual factors,” he noted.
