Initiative launched with Tata 1mg to benefit 70,000 people across 70 remote villages in Kalahandi region

In a significant push to strengthen healthcare access in Odisha’s remote regions, state Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling has inaugurated Vedanta Aluminium’s first-of-its-kind 24x7 Telemedicine Facility at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi.

The initiative, launched virtually in partnership with Tata 1mg, aims to bring timely specialist medical care closer to people in some of the state’s most remote villages.

The programme introduces round-the-clock digital consultations through a dedicated system designed for employees, families, business partners, and surrounding communities.

A Telemedicine Room has also been set up at Vedanta Lanjigarh Hospital to enable assisted consultations for those needing in-person support. Through the Tata 1mg App, beneficiaries can now access free audio and video consultations with nearly 30 specialist and super-specialist doctors, significantly reducing the need for long-distance travel.

The service is expected to directly benefit over 70,000 people across nearly 70 remote villages in Kalahandi and adjoining regions.

Speaking at the launch, Mukesh Mahaling said,“Vedanta’s 24x7 telemedicine facility is a meaningful step towards improving healthcare access for communities in Kalahandi, especially in remote tribal and rural areas where timely medical consultation can make a significant difference.

"Vedanta’s broader work in healthcare, education, women empowerment and livelihoods reflects how responsible industry can support the state’s development priorities. Continued collaboration between government, industry and communities will be important for ensuring inclusive and balanced development across Odisha.”

From the industry side, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharyya highlighted Vedanta’s long-term commitment to the region, stating: “Odisha remains central to Vedanta’s growth journey, and the well-being of local communities is at the heart of our work in the state."

"With the launch of this telemedicine service, we are enhancing last-mile access to quality healthcare for those who need it the most. Across Odisha, especially in Kalahandi and Rayagada, many such meaningful interventions are rapidly bringing these areas to the socio-economic mainstream of the state.

"We remain committed to working closely with our local communities and the government to contribute meaningfully to Odisha’s inclusive and sustainable development," he added.

The telemedicine rollout is part of Vedanta’s wider social development ecosystem in the region. Projects such as Aarogya focus on preventive healthcare, health camps and outreach in remote villages. Sakhi is building women’s entrepreneurship and self-help group networks, while Sangam is supporting farmers through watershed development, irrigation, and climate-resilient agriculture.

According to the company, Vedanta Aluminium has invested over Rs. 1 lakh crore in Odisha and works with more than 20,000 MSMEs and business partners, creating widespread direct and indirect livelihood opportunities across its value chain.

As digital healthcare meets grassroots development, the Lanjigarh telemedicine initiative signals a sharper push toward bridging Odisha’s healthcare divide—especially in its most remote and underserved regions.
