Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, hosted a programme to mark World Physiotherapy Day, bringing together neurologists, physiotherapists, rehabilitation professionals and students to discuss emerging approaches in stroke rehabilitation.
Organised in association with Physiobharat, the programme focused on the evolving role of physiotherapy in stroke recovery, with experts highlighting a shift from restoring basic movement to promoting neuroplasticity, personalised rehabilitation and greater independence for stroke survivors.
The session, titled “From Movement to Neuroplasticity: The Next Era of Stroke Rehab,” also examined contemporary neuro-rehabilitation approaches and strategies for spasticity management.
Dr. Praveen Gupta, Senior Neurologist and Chairman – MAIINS, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, said, “The aim of stroke rehabilitation is not simply to help a patient move a limb again; it is to assist the individual in regaining function, confidence and independence.”
“Our growing understanding of the brain’s ability to adapt has opened up new possibilities in rehabilitation. However, these benefits can only be achieved through structured therapy, repeated practice and active participation by the patient,” Gupta said.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 2.4 billion people worldwide live with a health condition that could benefit from rehabilitation, while approximately 86 million people require rehabilitation as a result of stroke.
A systematic review and meta-analysis of community-based studies found that stroke prevalence in India ranged from 44.54 to 150 per 100,000 people, while incidence ranged from 33 to 123 per 100,000 in urban areas.
