Novo Nordisk India has launched Awiqli (insulin icodec), the world's first once-weekly basal insulin for adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. Available in India from July 10, 2026, Awiqli is designed to simplify insulin therapy by replacing daily injections with a single weekly dose, reducing the annual injection burden from Rs. 365 to just Rs. 52.

Awiqli is priced at Rs. 2,611 for a 1 ml FlexTouch pen containing 700 insulin units, sufficient for approximately 10 weeks of therapy at a weekly dose of 70 units (equivalent to about Rs. 261 per week). The 3 ml pen containing 2,100 insulin units is priced at Rs. 7,833.

The launch marks a significant advancement in diabetes management, with the company positioning Awiqli as a transformative innovation aimed at improving treatment adherence and reducing the psychological and physical barriers associated with insulin therapy.

Clinical evidence from the ONWARDS-1 programme showed that Awiqli delivered superior HbA1c reduction and improved Time in Range compared with once-daily insulin glargine U100. More patients with Type 2 diabetes achieved an HbA1c level below 7% without experiencing hypoglycaemia, while also maintaining better glucose control throughout the day.

Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Director, Novo Nordisk India, said: “The launch of Awiqli is a defining moment for diabetes care in India. For more than a century, Novo Nordisk has pursued one ambition: to make insulin therapy simpler, safer and more accessible for patients.”

Dr. S. K. Wangnoo, Senior Consultant Endocrinologist and Diabetologist, Apollo Centre for Obesity, Diabetes & Endocrinology (ACODE), Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi, said: “Innovations that meaningfully simplify the treatment experience have the potential to change patient behaviour. A once-weekly basal insulin could reduce the apprehension around starting insulin and help clinicians have more productive conversations about timely treatment.”
