The initiative by Rheumatology Association of Gujarat is aimed at strengthening patient-centric autoimmune care

Rheumatology Association of Gujarat (RAG), with support from Antardhwani, has launched a dedicated Lupus Patient Support Group in Ahmedabad to strengthen support systems for individuals living with complex autoimmune diseases.

The initiative marks a significant step towards advancing patient education, early diagnosis, and community-driven care for lupus patients in India. Around 150 participants attended the launch event, engaging in interactive sessions with healthcare experts who discussed the impact of lupus on immune function, inflammation, and multiple organ systems, along with its implications for women’s health and pregnancy.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, leading to inflammation and damage affecting the skin, joints, kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain. The newly launched support group aims to create a collaborative platform for patients, caregivers, and medical professionals by providing structured guidance, reliable medical information, and emotional support.

“Awareness remains our strongest tool. Many patients present late due to a lack of understanding of early symptoms. Initiatives like this support group help bridge that gap and encourage timely medical intervention,” said Dr. Reena Sharma, President, Rheumatology Association, Gujarat.

“Lupus is a complex disease with highly variable symptoms, which often leads to delayed diagnosis. Early recognition and consistent monitoring are critical to preventing irreversible organ damage,” said Dr. Anuj Shukla, Secretary, Rheumatology Association Gujarat.

“Lupus requires lifelong management, but with the right treatment and patient awareness, outcomes have improved dramatically. Support systems play a crucial role in helping patients adhere to treatment and maintain quality of life,” said Dr. Vishnu Sharma, Rheumatologist.
