The hospital successfully treats two complex high-risk cardiac patients using advanced minimally invasive heart surgeries

CARE Hospitals, Visakhapatnam has successfully treated two highly complex, high-risk cardiac patients through advanced minimally invasive heart surgeries, demonstrating the growing availability of sophisticated tertiary cardiac care in the region.

The procedures were performed under the leadership of Dr. Bharath Kumar Mohandoss, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon (Minimally Invasive and Robotic Cardiac Surgeon), highlighting the increasing role of minimally invasive cardiac surgery in managing elderly and high-risk patients while enabling faster recovery and improved clinical outcomes.

In the first case, the hospital's cardiac surgery team successfully performed a complex multivessel Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (MICS CABG) procedure on a 64-year-old patient from Visakhapatnam suffering from severe coronary artery disease and a significantly elevated risk of stroke.

The patient had multiple health complications, including diabetes, hypertension, severe multivessel coronary artery disease, and critical blockages in both carotid arteries that supply blood to the brain. These conditions substantially increased the risk of stroke during surgery. Further assessments revealed severely reduced heart pumping function, making the procedure particularly challenging.

Despite the heightened surgical and neurological risks, the team successfully carried out the advanced minimally invasive bypass surgery while implementing meticulous intraoperative measures to minimise stroke-related complications.

The patient's recovery was remarkably swift. He was weaned off ventilator support within hours of surgery, began walking the same day, climbed stairs independently the next day, and was discharged within just two days.

In another complex cardiac intervention, Dr. Bharath Kumar Mohandoss and his team successfully treated a 60-year-old high-risk cardiac patient from Eluru through advanced minimally invasive heart surgery despite multiple co-existing medical complications and severe surgical risk factors.

According to the hospital, both cases underscore how minimally invasive cardiac surgery is transforming the treatment of complex heart conditions by reducing surgical trauma, minimising blood loss, lowering infection risk, and enabling shorter hospital stays.

Dr. Bharath Kumar Mohandoss said, “These two cases were extremely complex, involving severe coronary artery blockages, elevated stroke risk, and significantly reduced heart function. Successfully managing such high-risk cases requires advanced infrastructure, high-end cardiac surgery technology, and close coordination between experienced cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, critical care specialists, and dedicated cardiac ICU teams.”

G. Sukesh Reddy, Chief Operating Officer, CARE Hospitals, Visakhapatnam, “Patients from North Andhra can now access sophisticated minimally invasive heart surgeries, advanced cardiac interventions, and complex tertiary cardiac care closer to home without needing to travel to metro cities for treatment.”
