Jupiter Hospital performs world's first robotic kidney transplants outside China using Toumai surgical system

Thane-based hospital completes two successful kidney transplants with CE-certified robotic platform from MicroPort MedBot

Jupiter Hospital, Thane has successfully performed what it claims are the world's first robotic kidney transplant surgeries outside China using the CE-certified Toumai robotic surgical system developed by MicroPort MedBot.

The two consecutive kidney transplant procedures were carried out on patients with end-stage kidney disease, both of whom recovered well following surgery, marking a significant milestone in the global adoption of the Toumai robotic platform.

The surgeries were led by senior transplant surgeon Dr. P. P. Rao, while robotic kidney transplant surgeon Dr. Lokesh Sinha performed the robotic procedures along with the hospital's multidisciplinary transplant team. The achievement comes as Jupiter Hospital's kidney transplant programme completes 15 years, including three years of robotic kidney transplantation.

Kidney transplantation is among the most technically demanding surgical procedures, requiring precise reconstruction of delicate blood vessels and the urinary tract. According to the hospital, the Toumai robotic platform provided high-definition three-dimensional visualisation along with enhanced dexterity and surgical precision, enabling the team to perform the complex procedures with greater control.
