Advanced image-free robotic platform to support greater precision, personalised planning, and improved patient outcomes

P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre has strengthened its orthopaedic care capabilities with the introduction of the advanced CORI Surgical System for robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement surgeries at its Mahim and Khar facilities.

Developed by Smith+Nephew, the handheld image-free robotic-assisted platform is designed to support greater surgical precision, personalised joint replacement planning, improved joint alignment, and enhanced accuracy during surgery.

Unlike conventional robotic systems that require pre-operative CT scans, the CORI Surgical System maps the patient’s anatomy during surgery itself, reducing radiation exposure while enabling a more streamlined and patient-friendly surgical workflow. The technology provides surgeons with real-time intraoperative data and haptic feedback, helping achieve highly accurate implant positioning while preserving healthy bone and surrounding soft tissue.

The robotic-assisted technology can benefit patients suffering from severe arthritis, chronic joint pain, joint instability, or cases where conservative treatments such as medication and physiotherapy have not provided adequate relief. The hospital said the technology is expected to support faster rehabilitation, reduced post-operative discomfort, improved mobility, and enhanced long-term implant performance.

“As a special introductory offering, robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement surgeries using the CORI Surgical System will be provided at no additional cost for a limited period,” the hospital stated.

“At P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, we remain committed to bringing world-class medical innovations and advancements to our patients,” said Gautam Khanna. “Offering the advanced CORI robotic-assisted joint replacement system marks another important step in strengthening our orthopaedic capabilities.”

Dr. Sanjay Agarwala said, “The CORI Surgical System allows surgeons to take a far more personalised and precise approach to joint replacement surgery. The technology provides real-time information during surgery, helping us make informed decisions regarding implant positioning, alignment, and tissue balance.”
