Following comprehensive evaluation, a bilateral lung transplant was identified as the only definitive treatment to restore his breathing and quality of life
Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City, Hyderabad, has successfully performed a complex double lung transplant on a 47-year-old patient diagnosed with Anti-synthetase Syndrome-associated Fibrotic Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), offering him a new lease on life after two years of oxygen dependence.
The patient had been living with progressive fibrotic ILD, a condition that causes irreversible scarring of the lungs and can lead to severe respiratory failure. Despite receiving optimal medical treatment, his lung function continued to decline, leaving him dependent on long-term oxygen therapy.
Following comprehensive evaluation, a bilateral lung transplant was identified as the only definitive treatment to restore his breathing and quality of life.
The transplant was successfully performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr. V. Nagarjuna Maturu, Clinical Director, Department of Pulmonology, along with Dr. Manjunath Bale, Lung Transplant Surgeon; Dr. Vikram Reddy, Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon (CTVS); Dr. Battu Chaithanya, Transplant Pulmonologist; and Dr. Sushanth Panda, Transplant Anaesthetist.
The patient's perioperative and postoperative care was overseen by the Critical Care team under Dr. Ravi Shankar, with support from transplant nurses, physiotherapists, dietitians and transplant coordinators.
The surgery was completed successfully without any intraoperative or postoperative complications. Following the transplant, the patient was gradually weaned off oxygen support, regained functional independence and was able to walk comfortably before discharge. His recovery enabled him to return home just 10 days after the procedure.
