Codis, a global contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) specializing in spray drying and advanced particle engineering, has announced a major boost to its UK operations with the purchase of a GEA Pharma-SD type PSD-4 solvent-capable spray dryer. The move will make Codis the only UK CDMO offering this cutting-edge capacity.
The new equipment will be installed at Codis’ 400,000-square-foot Haverhill facility and is expected to be operational by 2027. The expansion is backed by the UK government’s Life Sciences Innovative Manufacturing Fund (LSIMF), which offers up to £520 million in capital grants to life sciences manufacturers, subject to final terms.
The PSD4 is a large-scale, cGMP pharmaceutical spray dryer capable of producing commercial batches of up to 500 kg and an annual total capacity of 30,000 kg. Codis says the expansion meets soaring demand for solvent-based spray drying of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs), a technology that improves bioavailability of poorly soluble drug candidates and accelerates their journey to market.
The new PSD4 will complement Codis’ existing PSD2 unit, which handles pilot-scale and smaller commercial-scale production. Together, the systems offer customers a seamless path from development to large-scale commercial manufacturing.
“This milestone marks the next phase in Codis' evolution as a global leader in spray drying and ASD,” said Nicolas Fortin, Chief Executive Officer of Codis.
“The PSD4 significantly expands our ASD capacity and gives customers dedicated commercial‑scale throughput to bring more life‑changing medicines to market. We are grateful for the support of the UK government through the LSIMF, which enables us to accelerate this project and continue investing at our Haverhill site.”
The project will also generate employment in the Haverhill region, with short-term construction, installation, and commissioning roles, followed by long-term positions as production ramps up. Codis plans to leverage local suppliers and contractors, boosting economic growth within the UK’s life sciences ecosystem.
