Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry (SMDI) approves 24 projects worth Rs. 101.5 crore to reduce import dependence
The Government has intensified support for MSMEs and startups to strengthen indigenous medical device manufacturing, approving 24 projects under the Marginal Investment Scheme for Reducing Import Dependence (MIS-RID) with total grant assistance of Rs. 101.5 crore.
The information was shared by Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Jagat Prakash Nadda in Lok Sabha ON July 24, 2026.
Several of the approved projects focus on high-precision medical technologies, including X-ray tubes, RT-PCR machines, recombinant antigens and monoclonal antibodies, polymer tubing for dialysis and infusion therapy, haemodialyzer membranes, intravascular lithotripsy catheters, ophthalmic lenses, point-of-care diagnostic analysers and radiotherapy equipment.
The government noted that seven beneficiaries developing high-precision medical instruments are MSMEs, including four startups.
Additionally, 13 projects have been approved or accorded in-principle approval under the Common Facilities for Medical Device Clusters (CFMDC) component with grant support of Rs. 88.67 crore. These include common facilities for medical glass manufacturing, rapid prototyping, electrical safety testing, biocompatibility testing, implant testing, mould fabrication and calibration laboratories.
The initiatives form part of the Rs. 500 crore Scheme for Strengthening of Medical Device Industry (SMDI) aimed at reducing import dependence, enhancing testing infrastructure, supporting innovation and building manufacturing capabilities.
