The white paper by FICCI-DUA Consulting underscores the need for building a robust ecosystem for servicing, maintenance, calibration and lifecycle management of medical equipment

India’s medical device sector, currently valued at around $14 billion, is projected to reach $30–50 billion within this decade and potentially $250 billion by 2047, according to a FICCI-DUA Consulting White Paper.

The growth will be driven by rising healthcare demand, adoption of advanced technologies, government support for domestic manufacturing and India’s ambition to become a global MedTech hub.

The White Paper, titled ‘Service and Maintenance of Medical Equipment in Indian Healthcare – Towards a Safe, Reliable and Sustainable Medical Device Maintenance Ecosystem’, was released during the inaugural session of the 9th edition of India Medical Device 2026, organised by the Department of Pharmaceuticals in association with FICCI.

The report noted that initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and the Strengthening of Medical Devices Industry Scheme have helped expand domestic manufacturing capabilities and improve India’s global competitiveness.

However, it stressed that the sector’s long-term growth will depend not only on manufacturing but also on building a robust ecosystem for servicing, maintenance, calibration and lifecycle management of medical equipment.

The White Paper highlighted that reliable maintenance is critical for patient safety, clinical effectiveness, reducing equipment downtime, extending device lifecycles and maximising healthcare investments.

To strengthen the ecosystem, the report recommends a risk-tiered hybrid maintenance framework aligned with the CDSCO’s medical device classification system. It also calls for a national certification framework for service engineers, stronger technical training, innovative commercial models and a rationalised fiscal framework to encourage compliant maintenance practices.

The report further recommends greater adoption of predictive maintenance, digital monitoring and lifecycle management technologies to improve equipment reliability and minimise downtime.
