In a move set to reshape digital pathology, Sakura Finetek and Hamamatsu Photonics KK have announced a global alliance aimed at delivering standardised, scan-ready slides and high-quality digital imaging—streamlining the path from biopsy to diagnosis and strengthening clinical decision-making.
The partnership brings together Sakura Finetek’s expertise in automated tissue and slide preparation with Hamamatsu’s advanced imaging technologies. The goal: eliminate inefficiencies, reduce variability, and create a seamless, end-to-end workflow for pathology labs under mounting pressure to deliver faster, more accurate results.
Both companies say the collaboration is driven by a shared mission to improve patient outcomes by aligning every step of the diagnostic process—from sample preparation to digital review.
"Across Europe, laboratories are under increasing pressure to do more with less, while maintaining uncompromising quality," said Jaap Stuut, President, Sakura Finetek Europe.
"By combining Sakura’s proven expertise in producing consistently high-quality slides with Hamamatsu’s imaging excellence, we are creating a workflow that empowers pathologists to focus on what truly matters: confident, timely diagnoses for every patient. This partnership is about delivering impact, better outcomes, more efficiency, and a shared vision for the future of digital pathology."
"Digital pathology can only be as strong as the slide that enters the scanner," said Tadashi Maruno, President, Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. "NanoZoomer systems are built to deliver high-quality whole slide images. This partnership with Sakura Finetek reinforces a ‘one complete workflow’ mindset, supporting consistent slide preparation and clear imaging so pathologists can focus on what matters most: arriving at the right diagnosis for each patient."
At the core of the alliance is a push toward a fully integrated digital pathology workflow. The companies will align slide preparation and scanning processes to cut down on rework and delays, while jointly supporting laboratories in designing efficient, end-to-end systems—from histology through to digital diagnostics.
They will also roll out shared educational initiatives focused on best practices for producing scan-ready slides and achieving reliable whole slide imaging.
The partnership aims for a phased rollout planned across Europe starting in late June. Initial markets include Germany, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, and the Netherlands, with further expansion expected as the collaboration develops.
As laboratories face growing demand and tighter resources, Sakura Finetek and Hamamatsu are betting that tighter integration—and sharper images—will be key to faster, more confident diagnoses worldwide.
