Abbott has launched an upgraded formulation of Ensure Diabetes Care, positioning the product as a science-backed nutritional tool for the rapidly growing global diabetes population. The US-headquartered global healthcare giant says the advanced formula builds on three decades of research in clinical nutrition and more than 60 clinical trials.
The new formulation features what Abbott calls a “triple care system,” anchored by a blend of nutrients aimed at supporting blood sugar control and metabolic health. The product contains four times more myo-inositol than the previous version and uses a low-glycemic-index carbohydrate mix designed to help reduce post-meal blood sugar spikes. High protein and fiber content work alongside these ingredients to help manage cholesterol and support weight control — factors that are increasingly central to diabetes management.
Abbott says that the clinical evidence behind diabetes-specific nutritional formulas shows they can help preserve lean muscle during weight loss while reducing overall and visceral fat. Visceral fat, stored deep around organs such as the liver and pancreas, is strongly linked to serious conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension.
The launch comes as diabetes accelerates worldwide. An estimated 589 million adults currently live with the condition, a number projected to soar to 853 million by 2050. India remains at the epicenter of this crisis with 101 million people affected — the second-highest burden globally. Amid this surge, experts say integrating targeted nutrition into daily routines is becoming essential.
“Diabetes-specific nutritional formula is a cornerstone of diabetes management,” said Agnes Siew Ling Tey, senior lead for clinical science and nutrition at Abbott’s Asia-Pacific R&D centre. “Clinical evidence shows that it can significantly improve glycemic control, reduce cardiometabolic risk, and support weight management. When combined with lifestyle interventions, it becomes a powerful tool to improve long-term outcomes.”
Tey noted that maintaining glycemic control remains a challenge for most, with three in four individuals struggling to keep blood glucose within a healthy range due to nutritional habits, genetics, and lifestyle factors. She said the updated Ensure Diabetes Care formula aims to offer a practical, science-driven option for those seeking better day-to-day management.
Anirban Basu, general manager of Abbott’s nutrition business in India, said the new formulation underscores the company’s commitment to “science-based nutrition” as diabetes rates climb. “Solutions that empower individuals to take charge of their health are more critical than ever,” he said, calling the product “a meaningful step forward” in supporting healthier, more active lives.
