DePuy Synthes partners with CMC Vellore to establish Orthopaedic Skill Lab

The partnership represents a broader industry-academia approach to skills development in orthopaedics, with the focus on simulation-based learning and greater familiarity with emerging surgical technologies

DePuy Synthes, a global provider of orthopaedic technologies and solutions, has partnered with the Department of Orthopedics at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore to establish a specialised Orthopaedic Skill Lab aimed at strengthening hands-on surgical training for orthopaedic residents, fellows and faculty.

The initiative is designed to provide structured training in procedural simulation, instrumentation and implant management, while increasing exposure to technology-assisted orthopaedic surgery. 

The lab will allow trainees to practise procedures using saw-bone models, participate in faculty-led case discussions and progressively familiarise themselves with technology-assisted surgical techniques.

The programme is intended to bridge the gap between classroom learning and live surgical procedures by enabling residents and fellows to develop familiarity with instruments, implants and surgical workflows before, or alongside, clinical exposure in the operating room.

Tamil Nadu, which has 78 medical colleges, is among India's major centres for medical education. With orthopaedic care becoming increasingly specialised and incorporating advanced technologies, the new facility at CMC Vellore is expected to contribute to hands-on surgical education in southern India.

“India's orthopaedic surgeons deserve the same structured, technology-enabled training available anywhere else in the world,” said Vishnu Kalra, International President, DePuy Synthes. He said the collaboration with CMC Vellore would enable the company to integrate with the region's medical training ecosystem while strengthening its commitment to developing surgical skills and supporting improved patient outcomes.
