The study will evaluate whether AI-assisted endoscopy can help clinicians detect upper gastrointestinal malignancies earlier and more effectively

FUJIFILM India has joined hands with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to advance the early detection of upper gastrointestinal (UGI) cancers through artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted endoscopy, supporting a landmark clinical research study under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The study will evaluate whether AI-assisted endoscopy can help clinicians detect upper gastrointestinal malignancies earlier and more effectively — a critical step towards improving patient outcomes in a country where these cancers continue to pose a significant health burden.

Early detection remains a major challenge. Many early-stage gastrointestinal lesions can be difficult to spot during routine endoscopic examinations because of their subtle appearance and variations in detection. Missed or delayed diagnoses can have serious consequences, making improved diagnostic capabilities essential.

AI-assisted endoscopy offers a potential breakthrough by helping clinicians identify suspicious abnormalities in real time that might otherwise go unnoticed. Through this collaboration, AIIMS Delhi and FUJIFILM India aim to generate robust clinical evidence on the technology's effectiveness in the Indian healthcare setting and support the wider adoption of evidence-based endoscopic practices.

Commenting on the initiative, Dr Radhika Tandon, Dean Research, AIIMS Delhi said, "Early diagnosis remains one of the most important determinants of survival in upper gastrointestinal cancers. As artificial intelligence continues to evolve within clinical practice, generating high-quality evidence through research is essential for understanding its real-world impact.

"This study aims to establish robust clinical evidence on the effectiveness of AI-assisted endoscopy within the Indian healthcare setting while contributing to future advancements in endoscopic diagnosis."

Koji Wada, Managing Director, FUJIFILM India Private Limited, said, "At FUJIFILM India, we believe advancing healthcare extends beyond delivering innovative technologies, it also involves supporting scientific research that strengthens clinical practice.

"This collaboration reflects our commitment to fostering partnerships that enable meaningful progress in early disease detection and improve access to high-quality diagnostics. As we continue to deepen our endoscopy ecosystem in India, we remain focused on contributing towards a future where technology empowers clinicians and delivers better outcomes for patients."

The collaboration underscores FUJIFILM India's broader commitment to strengthening India's endoscopy ecosystem through technological innovation, clinical research and long-term healthcare partnerships. By backing research alongside technological advancement, the company aims to support stronger diagnostic capabilities, more informed clinical decision-making and improved patient care.

As AI continues to find applications in healthcare, the study seeks to help establish the clinical evidence needed to assess its role in endoscopic diagnosis — placing research and early detection at the centre of efforts to improve outcomes for patients with upper gastrointestinal cancers.
