Roche unit plans end-to-end fill-finish site in Hillsboro to support portfolio and pipeline injectables
Roche-owned Genentech is investing $750 million to establish a new injectable manufacturing facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, expanding its US manufacturing footprint and strengthening its production capabilities for next-generation drug delivery formats.
The planned facility will be built on the same campus as Genentech’s existing Hillsboro manufacturing site and will provide end-to-end fill-finish manufacturing for a range of portfolio and pipeline injectable medicines from Roche and Genentech.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the new site will be capable of manufacturing both low- and high-volume autoinjectors and pre-filled syringes.
The company said the design will allow manufacturing capacity to adapt to changing demand, particularly as the pharmaceutical industry increasingly moves towards convenient drug-delivery formats that can support treatment outside traditional healthcare settings.
Genentech has not disclosed the specific medicines that will be manufactured at the new facility. Roche’s current portfolio includes several medicines delivered through pre-filled syringe formats, including Enspryng (satralizumab)for rare autoimmune disease, as well as Neorecormon (epoetin beta) and Mircera (methoxy polyethylene glycol epoetin beta) for anaemia.
The investment comes as pharmaceutical manufacturers continue to expand domestic production capacity in the US, while also increasing their ability to manufacture complex injectable therapies and patient-friendly delivery systems.
Construction of the Hillsboro facility is expected to generate employment for approximately 200 construction workers during the development phase.
Once operational, the site is expected to employ around 250 skilled manufacturing specialists.
The facility is targeted for completion in 2031 and will further strengthen Genentech’s manufacturing presence in Hillsboro, which has become an important production hub for the Roche Group in the US.
