Initiative aims to strengthen South-South collaboration and capacity building in biomedical research

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has announced its International Fellowship Programme for Biomedical Scientists from Developing Countries, aimed at strengthening global collaboration and capacity building in biomedical research.

The initiative offers scientists from developing nations an opportunity to undertake advanced training and research at leading Indian institutions and laboratories.

The programme is designed to support human resource development and scientific exchange in areas such as molecular medicine, genomics, immunology, epidemiology, surveillance, diagnostics, and therapeutic research.

Under the fellowship, selected candidates can pursue research and training programmes in India for durations ranging from one to six months. ICMR plans to award five fellowships annually to eligible biomedical scientists from developing countries.

Applicants must possess a minimum qualification of MBBS or MSc in life sciences, be employed at recognised scientific or health research institutions in their home countries, and preferably be under 45 years of age. The fellowship also requires candidates to submit a structured training plan and demonstrate proficiency in English.

The programme provides financial assistance including a subsistence allowance of Rs. 2,500 per day and economy-class return airfare. Fellows will also have access to subsidised guest-house accommodation during their stay in India.

According to ICMR, the initiative reflects India’s growing leadership in biomedical and public health research, particularly in tropical and communicable diseases.
