Medtronic has completed its $650 million acquisition of SPR Therapeutics, bringing the company’s category-defining SPRINT peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) technology into its pain therapy portfolio.

 

Also, strengthening its push to expand minimally invasive, non-opioid treatment options for patients living with chronic and acute pain.

 

The deal adds SPR’s FDA-cleared SPRINT PNS System to Medtronic’s neuroscience portfolio, creating what the company describes as the broadest pain therapy offering in the industry.

 

Chronic pain affects nearly 50 million U.S. adults and can severely disrupt mobility, sleep, work, and quality of life. The acquisition positions Medtronic to offer physicians and patients a new treatment option that uses targeted electrical stimulation near peripheral nerves to help manage pain — without opioids or a permanent implant.

 

SPR’s SPRINT PNS System is designed as a 60-day, minimally invasive therapy that can provide sustained pain relief for patients with chronic and acute pain. 

 

Clinical evidence supporting the technology includes prospective studies, case series, and randomized controlled trials. Pooled data from 13 studies found that 60% of patients achieved meaningful pain relief — defined as at least a 50% reduction in pain intensity — at the end of treatment, with responders experiencing an average 76% reduction in pain intensity.
