What started as a small, painless swelling in the arm turned into a high-stakes battle against a rare and aggressive cancer — one that could have cost a 46-year-old man the use of his arm. Instead, thanks to a complex, organ-preserving surgery at HCG Cancer Centre, Indore, the patient is now cancer-free with full hand and elbow movement restored.
Doctors diagnosed the patient with arm sarcoma originating in the biceps muscle, a condition that typically demands radical surgery and often results in permanent loss of function. The case was led by Dr Saket Mittal, Consultant – Surgical Oncologist, who faced the dual challenge of ensuring complete cancer removal while preserving the patient’s ability to use his arm.
The patient was admitted to HCG Cancer Centre, Indore on 20th May, 2025. After extensive evaluation and surgical planning, the team opted for a precision, organ-preserving approach. Surgery was performed the following day, during which the entire tumour was removed with clear margins — a critical step for long-term cancer control.
To restore function after removal of the biceps muscle, the surgical team used LD Flap Reconstruction, a specialised technique that rebuilt elbow strength and movement. The procedure succeeded in preserving the patient’s hand and retaining full arm functionality without compromising cancer safety.
The patient was discharged on 27th May, 2025. Within a month, he regained the ability to bend his elbow and return to normal daily activities. Today, he remains cancer-free and fully functional.
Explaining the importance of the case, Dr. Saket Mittal said, “This case demonstrates the importance of combining oncological precision with functional reconstruction. Our approach ensured complete removal of the tumour while preserving the patient’s quality of life, hand function, and independence. Organ-preserving surgeries like this reflect our commitment to patient-centric cancer care.”
Nitin Bamaniya, Chief Operating Officer, HCG Cancer Centre, Indore, added, “At HCG Cancer Centre, our focus goes beyond treating cancer to restoring function and improving quality of life. This successful surgery demonstrates how innovation, teamwork, and patient-focused care can deliver truly meaningful outcomes for patients.”
