Zeus Hygia Lifesciences is stepping up its focus on sports nutrition innovation with two microencapsulated ingredients, CreaStab and CXR Energy, designed to address key formulation challenges as the category expands beyond conventional powders and supplements.

From ready-to-drink beverages and gummies to energy bars and functional nutrition blends, sports nutrition brands are exploring new ways to deliver performance-focused ingredients in convenient formats. But integrating ingredients such as creatine and caffeine into these products can pose challenges involving stability, processing conditions, taste and release characteristics.

Zeus Hygia is targeting these challenges with two distinct technologies: CreaStab, a microencapsulated creatine monohydrate designed to improve stability and processing performance, and CXR Energy, a microencapsulated caffeine ingredient engineered for controlled release.

Creatine remains a widely used ingredient in sports nutrition formulations targeting strength, power and exercise performance. However, conventional creatine can face stability challenges under acidic conditions, elevated temperatures and moisture exposure, potentially limiting its application in products that require more demanding processing conditions.

Zeus Hygia's CreaStab is designed to address these limitations through microencapsulation, helping manufacturers explore applications beyond traditional powder-based supplements.

According to the company's technical specifications, CreaStab demonstrates stability under simulated acidic conditions at pH 2.0 and pH 4.0, as well as during processing at temperatures of 130–150°C. The ingredient also offers more than 95% solubility, low creatinine levels and a tasteless, odourless profile.

These characteristics could expand formulation possibilities for manufacturers looking to incorporate creatine into a broader range of sports nutrition and functional food formats.

While CreaStab focuses on ingredient stability, CXR Energy addresses another formulation opportunity: caffeine release.

Conventional caffeine is typically associated with rapid release. Zeus Hygia's CXR Energy uses a multilayer protective coating designed to regulate caffeine release over time, offering manufacturers an alternative to conventional caffeine ingredients.

Standardised to 60% caffeine, the microencapsulated ingredient is engineered to provide a more gradual release profile than conventional caffeine under tested conditions. The technology is intended to support the development of products positioned around sustained energy and endurance-oriented applications.

For sports nutrition brands, this creates an opportunity to explore differentiated caffeine delivery profiles in energy-focused supplements and other performance-oriented formulations.

“Sports nutrition is evolving and manufacturers are looking to develop products that combine performance-oriented ingredients with greater convenience and differentiated consumer experiences. This shift brings new formulation challenges, whether it is maintaining creatine stability across processing conditions or controlling the release of caffeine in energy-focused products.

Through CreaStab and CXR Energy, we are applying microencapsulation technology to address these distinct requirements and help manufacturers explore new possibilities in sports nutrition,” said Arunkanth Krishnakumar, Co-founder and CEO, Zeus Hygia Lifesciences.

The two ingredients reflect a broader shift in sports nutrition, where innovation increasingly extends beyond ingredient selection to encompass processing compatibility, delivery characteristics and finished-product formats.

As brands pursue convenient options for active consumers, technologies that help address formulation constraints could play a greater role in the development of differentiated products across sports nutrition and functional nutrition.
