Clara Sattler de Sousa e Brito to lead discovery solutions from Q3 2026, while Robert Machinek takes over as Head of Strategy & Business Development
Leading science and technology company Merck has announced two strategic leadership appointments within its Life Science business, reinforcing its commitment to innovation, customer success, and long-term growth.
The company has named Clara Sattler de Sousa e Brito as Head of Discovery Solutions, effective in the third quarter of 2026, and Robert Machinek as Head of Strategy & Business Development, effective immediately.
Sattler de Sousa e Brito will lead the Discovery Solutions business unit, which supports research and early-stage scientific discovery through digital tools, analytical technologies, and products spanning biology and chemistry workflows.
Sousa joins Merck from Philips, where she served as Executive Vice President and Market Leader Europe. Her previous leadership positions at Siemens Healthineers and Linde provided her with extensive experience in healthcare, medical technology, commercial operations, and digital transformation.
Machinek will oversee Life Science strategy execution, business development initiatives, mergers and acquisitions, ERP transformation programs, and strategic alignment across regions and business units.
Prior to joining Merck, he was a Partner at McKinsey & Company, where he advised life science and healthcare organizations across North America, Europe, and Asia on growth strategies, digital transformation, M&A, and operational excellence.
Jean-Charles Wirth, Member of the Executive Board of Merck and CEO Life Science, noted that both leaders bring strong customer focus, strategic expertise, and leadership capabilities that will help advance the company’s growth agenda.
