According to figures shared during the Mumbai engagement, Gujarat accounts for around 18% of India's pharmaceutical sector, while the state has a 16% share in pharmaceutical manufacturing

Gujarat is positioning pharmaceuticals, medtech and biotechnology as key pillars of its next phase of industrial growth, with the state government highlighting the sectors’ investment potential at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) 2027 roadshow in Mumbai.

The roadshow, held on September 3 brought together leading industrialists, investors and diplomatic representatives as Gujarat stepped up its pitch ahead of the 11th edition of VGGS, scheduled for January 10-12, 2027.

A key focus of the state's pitch was its existing strength in pharmaceuticals and its ambition to move further up the value chain through R&D, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, robotics and digital technologies.

According to figures shared during the Mumbai engagement, Gujarat accounts for around 18% of India's pharmaceutical sector, while the state has a 16% share in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The state is also targeting an opportunity estimated at $3-5 billion by 2047.

The government is seeking to build on this base by creating state-of-the-art R&D hubs, with an emphasis on emerging technologies and greater integration of research, manufacturing and healthcare capabilities.

The pharma and medtech push comes against the backdrop of Gujarat's established industrial ecosystem, which the state is seeking to leverage to attract investments in higher-value life sciences activities rather than focusing solely on manufacturing.

The Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2027, themed “Viksit Gujarat – Shaping Global Future,” will be held at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar,.

The roadshow pitch indicated a broader ambition for Gujarat's life sciences sector — from being a major manufacturing base to becoming a destination for drug discovery, biotechnology, medtech innovation and technology-led healthcare.

The state is also showcasing its Gujarat State Biotechnology Policy 2022-27, under which investors can choose from a range of incentives and support mechanisms. The policy is intended to encourage investments across biotechnology and related areas and strengthen Gujarat's position as a biotechnology hub.

Healthcare infrastructure is another component of the state's pitch. The government highlighted its network of multi-specialty hospitals, more than 350 higher-education institutions and 10 institutions of national importance, presenting the ecosystem as a potential foundation for healthcare innovation, talent development and medical research.

The Mumbai roadshow also featured one-on-one interactions between Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and senior representatives of major companies.

The meetings covered pharmaceuticals, healthcare and wellness, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing among a wider set of sectors. Companies represented in the discussions included Cipla, Sun Pharma and Piramal Group, alongside major industrial and infrastructure players.

For Gujarat, the emphasis on pharma, medtech and biotech reflects an attempt to connect its existing manufacturing advantage with the next generation of life sciences opportunities — including innovation, digital health, advanced therapies and technology-enabled healthcare.

The state is now expected to use the run-up to VGGS 2027 to engage more closely with pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, investors and technology firms, with the ultimate objective of converting the investment pitch into new projects, expansions and strategic partnerships.
