Marking a major leap for biologics innovation in this country, Telangana has unveiled India’s first single-use bioprocess design and scale-up hub that aims to create over 500 high-quality jobs.

The launch of the major new pillar in Genome Valley’s innovation engine with the inauguration of Telangana 1 Bio, the state government said, marks a decisive push to strengthening India’s biologics and next-generation therapeutics pipeline.

This will, in turn, give innovators affordable, predictable access to scale-up infrastructure — long seen as a critical gap in the country’s biopharma ecosystem.

Built on a 2-acre campus and developed by the Government of Telangana with the Department of Biotechnology and TGIIC, 1 Bio houses a state-of-the-art bioprocess development and scale-up centre featuring single-use bioreactors up to 500L, advanced upstream and downstream systems, and a dedicated analytical suite.

The hub has been developed in partnership with global life sciences leader Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Alongside the core facility, the campus includes 150,000 sq. ft. of plug-and-play R&D labs, configurable innovation suites, shared analytical spaces and bioprocess training labs — creating an integrated, end-to-end environment for biopharma development and pilot-scale validation.

The inauguration coincided with the 25-year milestone of Genome Valley, where IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu unveiled a new identity for the cluster and the design of a landmark gateway structure that will anchor its global branding on the State Highway.

To support the next phase of expansion, the Minister announced over Rs. 200 crore in infrastructure upgrades, including road widening, new greenfield roads, power augmentation, and landscaping improvements to enhance connectivity and quality of life within the cluster.

The State’s PPP model has already mobilised Rs. 150 crore in core infrastructure, while Thermo Fisher has invested Rs. 90 crore in the Bioprocess Design Centre and its co-located Customer Experience Centre. The 1 Bio ecosystem is expected to attract an additional Rs. 500 crore in private investment and create more than 500 high-quality jobs.

"In its 25th year, Genome Valley is setting the course for its next 25,” Minister Sridhar Babu said at the launch, calling 1 Bio “one of India’s most important steps” in democratising biologics scale-up and accelerating the journey from discovery to clinical readiness.

Senior industry leaders and government officials hailed the facility as a long-awaited catalyst to strengthen India’s biopharma innovation pipeline, with Thermo Fisher executives highlighting the company’s commitment to enabling a sustainable, tech-driven ecosystem for talent, R&D and manufacturing across the region.

Sanjay Kumar, Special Chief Secretary, Industries & Commerce and ITE&C Departments, Government of Telangana, said, “Telangana continues to lead the country’s life sciences growth story, accounting for 40% of its pharma production and a third of global vaccine production. 1 Bio adds an important dimension by giving innovators access to world-class bioprocess development and scale-up capacity within the State.”

Shakthi M Nagappan, CEO, Telangana Life Sciences Foundation, added, “1 Bio fills one of the most critical missing links in India’s biologics ecosystem. Start-ups and established companies can now use this shared facility to validate processes, generate pilot data, and build confidence in manufacturability without heavy upfront investments."

Tony Acciarito, President, Asia Pacific and Middle East, Africa Thermo Fisher Scientific, said, “India’s life sciences sector is at an inflection point. These new centres reinforce our commitment to supporting the region’s growth through meaningful collaborations that help researchers and industry partners move from ideas to impact faster.”
