Godavari Biorefineries bags Chinese patent for antiviral V-ATPase compounds

The Patent covers V-ATPase-inhibiting compounds and their use in treating viral infections

Godavari Biorefineries Limited has secured a new patent in China for its antiviral research, marking a major milestone in the expansion of its lifesciences portfolio.

The patent, titled "Use of Compounds for Treating Viral Infections," was granted by the China National Intellectual Property Administration. This achievement follows a similar patent approval in Japan, further strengthening the company's global intellectual property footprint and its capabilities in developing treatments for viral diseases.

Antiviral therapeutics rely on two primary strategies: attacking a virus directly or targeting the host-cell mechanisms it hijacks. The company's recently granted patent covers specialized compounds that inhibit Vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase)—a key cellular pathway used by various viruses to establish infection—alongside their use in antiviral formulations. This milestone expands the company’s international intellectual property portfolio, building on an earlier patent secured for the same therapeutic class in Japan.

Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, Dr Sandip Gavade, Dr Maithili Athavale, and Dr Prashant Kharkhar are the four inventors named on the patent. Dr Prashant S Kharkar, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Dean, Students and Alumni Affairs, Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, whose continued guidance has been an important part of our research journey, particularly in the investigation of V-ATPase-inhibiting compounds and their potential applications in viral infections.

The patent adds to Godavari Biorefineries Limited's intellectual property in the antiviral compound class and further strengthens its life sciences portfolio.
