Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill has secured European Commission approval, opening a new chapter in obesity treatment with the first GLP-1 receptor agonist available in tablet form across the European Union.

 

The landmark decision follows the positive opinion issued by the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) in May 2026 and marks the fifth regulatory approval for Wegovy pill, following authorisations in the US, UK, UAE and Bahrain.

“Obesity is a serious chronic disease, and choice can make a real difference. For many people, a tablet may be a simpler and more acceptable way to start and continue treatment. This is more than a regulatory milestone - it is a step toward better and lasting health for people with obesity and a strong societal response to one of Europe’s most significant health challenges.”

 

The approval is supported by results from Novo Nordisk’s OASIS clinical trial programme, including OASIS 4, which studied once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg in adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related comorbidity.

 

In the 64-week OASIS 4 trial, participants receiving oral semaglutide 25 mg achieved an average weight reduction of approximately 17%, compared with 3% for placebo when combined with lifestyle intervention. Around one in three participants achieved weight loss of 20% or more.

 

The safety and tolerability profile of oral semaglutide was consistent with the established injectable semaglutide profile, supported by years of patient experience. Treatment discontinuations due to adverse events were nearly comparable to placebo, at 6.9% versus 5.9%.

 

Alongside the Wegovy pill approval, the European Commission also authorised Wegovy 7.2 mg injection in a single-dose pen for people living with obesity.
