Funding will support the expansion of Remidio’s Oculomics platform to identify early signs of pre-eclampsia, anemia and gestational diabetes through retinal imaging, targeting underserved communities
Bengaluru-based Remidio Innovative Solutions has received a grant from the Gates Foundation to advance its Oculomics platform for maternal health applications across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with a focus on India and several African nations.
The initiative aims to harness retinal imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve early risk assessment for major pregnancy-related complications, including pre-eclampsia (PE), anemia and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
These conditions remain among the leading causes of maternal and perinatal mortality worldwide, particularly in resource-constrained settings where access to specialist care and advanced diagnostics remains limited.
The program comes against the backdrop of a significant global maternal health challenge. An estimated two million stillbirths occur annually worldwide—equivalent to one every 16 seconds—with nearly 84% taking place in LMICs.
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, especially pre-eclampsia, are among the leading causes of these deaths and contribute to approximately 42,000 maternal deaths every year.
Dr. Anand Sivaraman, Chief Executive Officer and Founding Director of Remidio,” said, “A retinal image takes seconds and can be captured by a frontline worker with minimal training. This grant allows us to ask a clear question with real rigour: can the platform already deployed widely for diabetic retinopathy also help identify pregnancies at risk, in the places where that information is needed most."
