The deal marks a significant move for the Indian medical equipment brand
BPL Medical Technologies is stepping up its global ambitions with the acquisition of a majority shareholding in European medical technology company Medec, securing access to specialised technology, intellectual property and product development capabilities as it looks to build a globally competitive medical technology business.
The deal marks a significant move for the Indian medical equipment brand, which operates under the BPL Group and brings a 60-year legacy to the table. By bringing Medec’s technology and engineering expertise into its fold, BPL Medical Technologies aims to strengthen its product portfolio, gain greater control over innovation and reduce reliance on external suppliers.
At the heart of the acquisition are Medec’s advanced anaesthesia workstations and ventilators, three patents and a product development pipeline that includes an electronic vaporiser and a value-engineered version of its Caelus anaesthesia workstation.
Beyond expanding its product range, the acquisition is expected to give BPL Medtech greater control over product quality, functionality, technology development and margins. It also strengthens the company’s in-house capabilities in anaesthesia and respiratory care, opening up opportunities to accelerate product development within its own technology ecosystem.
“This strategic acquisition marks an important milestone in BPL Medical Technologies’ growth trajectory and our ambition to emerge as a stronger global player in medical technology. Medec brings differentiated technology, intellectual property and an established international footprint that complement our anaesthesia and respiratory care portfolio.
"This tech acquisition will strengthen our product capabilities, deepen our control over innovation and quality, and open new markets. We see significant opportunities to leverage BPL’s global network to accelerate Medec’s growth and create greater value for customers worldwide,” said Guruswamy Krishnamoorthy, CEO, BPL Medical Technologies.
The acquisition also gives BPL Medtech access to Medec’s established international commercial network, with distributors across more than 30 countries in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Southeast Asia and Latin America.
The network provides a ready platform for expanding the reach of Medec’s CE-certified technologies into additional markets, reinforcing BPL Medical Technologies’ push to build a more globally connected business.
For Medec, the deal opens a new chapter backed by the resources and reach of an established medical technology organisation.
“This acquisition marks an important phase in Medec’s journey as we become part of a global medical technology organisation. BPL Medical Technologies brings a strong technology focus and an established presence across healthcare markets, creating opportunities to build on Medec’s capabilities and extend its reach.
"We look forward to combining our expertise with BPL Medtech’s resources and global network to support the next phase of growth,” said Kristof Braem, Managing Director, Medec International BV.
The companies are also looking to explore opportunities at the intersection of medical technology and digital health. As part of its medium-term technology roadmap, BPL Medtech is evaluating the potential integration of Medec’s technologies with its Cortex AI platform, which could connect Medec’s anaesthesia capabilities with BPL Medical Technologies’ existing digital technology ecosystem.
