The company's materials are already supporting innovation across several critical areas of medical technology

From complex heart surgery and life-saving pacemakers to spinal implants and advanced surgical instruments, next-generation medical technologies increasingly depend on materials that can do more than conventional metals and plastics.

At the forefront of this shift is Syensqo, which is working with medical-device manufacturers to develop high-performance materials designed to meet demanding healthcare requirements, improve device functionality and address challenges that traditional materials may struggle to overcome.

“Behind every medical device is a series of critical choices about how it needs to perform, both for healthcare professionals and for patients,” said Natalie Dragunat, Global Marketing Manager, Healthcare at Syensqo. “Our role is to bring advanced materials science into that equation, helping medical-device innovators solve complex challenges and turn new possibilities into technologies that can make a difference in patient care.”

The company's materials are already supporting innovation across several critical areas of medical technology.

In cardiothoracic surgery, Thoracic Innovations uses a Syensqo high-strength resin in its sternal spacer, designed to protect the heart and stabilise the chest when it must remain temporarily open following certain surgical procedures.

In cardiac care, Biotronik has selected a Syensqo high-performance polymer for its pacemakers. The material combines biocompatibility for indefinite implantation with transparency, allowing surgeons to position electrodes with greater precision.

In spinal surgery, a biomaterial from Syensqo features in a spinal fusion cage developed by Shanghai REACH Medical Instrument. It combines mechanical properties relevant to bone with bioactive functionality designed to support bone integration.

Advanced polymers are also transforming surgical instruments by reducing weight and improving visibility during procedures.

An orthopedic surgical guide developed by Hanisch Medical and TechImport using a Syensqo advanced polymer is up to 70% lighter than conventional metal versions. It also allows unobstructed X-ray imaging during surgery, helping healthcare professionals work with greater visibility.

In surgical lighting, MezLight uses a Syensqo high-performance polymer in its reusable surgical task light. The material enables focused illumination while reducing the physical strain associated with traditional surgical headlamps. It also delivers durability and withstands repeated steam sterilisation.

Meanwhile, GLW Medical Innovation is incorporating a Syensqo high-performance polymer into its ApolloAnkle™ Fracture Plating System. The solution combines 3D-printed titanium with a bone-like polymer to support fracture fixation while improving visibility during medical imaging.

Beyond individual applications, Syensqo is stepping up its collaboration with medical-device manufacturers at the earliest stages of product development.

Drawing on more than 60 years of high-performance polymer innovation, the company is working to bring materials science and application expertise into the design process before critical product decisions are finalised.

In 2026, Syensqo joined MedTech Innovator, a global accelerator supporting medical-device, diagnostic and digital-health companies, to provide emerging healthcare businesses with access to its materials and application expertise.

“Some of the most important decisions in medical-device development are made at the very beginning of the product design,” said Marie-Beatrice Madec, Head of Marketing Life Solutions at Syensqo. “That’s why we work with innovators from day one, bringing advanced materials expertise into the design process when it can make the greatest difference, while staying alongside them as their technologies evolve, from initial concept to solutions ready for the healthcare market.”

Syensqo will showcase its continued engagement with the medical-device industry at COMPAMED 2026 in Düsseldorf, Germany, from 16 to 19 November at booth 8AL14.

As medical technologies become increasingly sophisticated, the materials behind them are playing a more critical role in determining their performance, usability and compatibility with the human body.

Through advanced materials science and early-stage collaboration with healthcare innovators, Syensqo is positioning itself as a partner in developing the next generation of medical devices — with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes for patients and healthcare professionals.
