The segment delivered strong sales growth of 20% YoY
The Indian pharmaceutical market (IPM) delivered a normalised performance in July 2021 with sales growth of 13.7% (June 2021: 14.1%), according to a research note by India-Ratings (Ind-Ra).
The acute segment continued to deliver strong sales growth of around 20% YoY in July 2021 (June 2021: 20.6%) on a low base while the chronic segment’s growth was marginally lower at 8.3% (9.1%), leading to the overall healthy sales growth in July 2021.
The highest ever growth of 51.5% and 47.8% YoY was reported in April and May 2021, respectively, driven by the lockdown-related lower base last year and higher volume growth. In terms of growth drivers, the price growth, new product launches growth and volume growth stood at 5.7%, 3.5% and 4.5% YoY, respectively, which led to overall India’s IPM size reaching INR138 billion in July 2021.
Acute therapies led the growth show while the chronic segment was stable: Continued strong growth was seen in the acute therapies segment in July 2021 at 20.3% YoY (June 2021: 20.6% YoY; May 2021: 70.3% YoY), while the chronic at 6.4% YoY (7.8% YoY; 27.7% YoY) and sub-chronic therapy segments at 11.3% YoY (11.2% YoY; 37.5% YoY) reported stable growth. During FY21, Ind-Ra highlights that the acute segment reported negative growth on account of COVID-19 while the chronic segment reported average growth of 7.0%.
Top five therapies’ contribution stood at 58% of IPM: These therapies are cardiac (chronic; 13.3% of IPM), anti-infectives (acute; 14.2%), gastro-intestinal (acute; 11.5%), anti-diabetic (chronic; 9.6%) and vitamins (acute; 9.2%).
