Deal marks a strategic shift for Enzene towards a focused global CDMO business

Global pharmaceutical company Adalvo has acquired Enzene’s romiplostim biosimilar programme, referencing blockbuster drug Nplate, in a move that strengthens its presence in the fast-growing biosimilars market and expands its push into complex biological medicines.

Under the agreement, Adalvo will take forward the programme’s international development and commercialisation, while Enzene will continue as its development and manufacturing partner. The Pune-based biopharmaceutical company will also support regulatory submissions to major global authorities, including the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).

The acquisition gives Adalvo access to a technically complex biosimilar programme developed using microbial cell line technology. Romiplostim is indicated for adults and children with chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), a condition characterised by low platelet counts.

The commercial opportunity is substantial. The reference product, Nplate, generated approximately $1.5 billion in global sales in 2025, according to the companies.

For Adalvo, the deal represents another significant step in its strategy to build a broader biosimilars portfolio and expand beyond its established pharmaceutical business into complex biologics. The company is developing capabilities across the entire biosimilar value chain, from cell line development to regulatory approval, manufacturing and commercialisation.

“Biosimilars are a natural extension of Adalvo’s capabilities into complex biological medicines and an important part of our long-term growth strategy. This acquisition strengthens our portfolio with a technically sophisticated programme while bringing together Enzene’s scientific and manufacturing expertise with Adalvo’s global development, regulatory and commercial platform.

"We are proud to partner with Enzene, a highly respected organisation with deep scientific and manufacturing expertise, and we look forward to establishing a long-term strategic relationship that extends beyond a single programme," said Anil Okay, CEO, Adalvo.

The transaction also signals a strategic shift for Enzene, which is transitioning its biosimilar pipeline to commercial partners while concentrating its business model on contract development and manufacturing services (CDMO) for biologics.

Enzene has developed the romiplostim programme from cell line development through regulatory approval and commercial supply in India. Under the new arrangement, it will retain responsibility for development and manufacturing, supplying the product from its GMP-approved facilities in Pune.

The company will also support Adalvo in taking the biosimilar through regulatory processes across international markets.

For Enzene, the deal represents an opportunity to leverage its scientific, regulatory and manufacturing capabilities while expanding its role as a global partner to biopharmaceutical companies.

“This partnership with Adalvo is a milestone for Enzene. Having taken romiplostim from cell line development through to regulatory approval and commercial supply in India, we are entrusting a strong global partner to bring it to patients internationally, while Enzene continues as development and manufacturing partner.

"This transaction strengthens Enzene’s position as a leading global biosimilar CDMO, developing, scaling and manufacturing complex biologics for partners worldwide. Enzene is built on deep scientific, regulatory and GMP expertise and a proven multi-market track record. We look forward to building on this relationship with Adalvo in the years ahead," said Himanshu Gadgil, CEO, Enzene.

The acquisition brings together Enzene’s biologics development and manufacturing infrastructure with Adalvo’s international regulatory, supply and commercial network.

For Adalvo, the partnership provides an entry point into a high-value segment of the biologics market while strengthening its ability to offer complex medicines to its global network of pharmaceutical partners.

For Enzene, it marks a new phase in its business strategy: transitioning biosimilar assets to international commercial partners while building its global CDMO operations.
