Dengue persists across Mumbai-Pune-Thane corridor for 16 weeks: Redcliffe Labs

Maharashtra is witnessing sustained dengue transmission this monsoon, with the Mumbai-Pune-Thane corridor emerging as a persistent hotspot for 16 consecutive weeks, according to diagnostic trends from Redcliffe Labs.

Unlike a sudden, short-duration spike, the prolonged positivity across the three cities points to continued dengue transmission pressure through the monsoon. Among more than 200 cities tracked by the laboratory network, Mumbai recorded nearly 8% dengue positivity, while Pune reported more than 7%.

The concentration of elevated positivity across Mumbai, Pune and Thane is particularly significant as it indicates that dengue activity is extending across a connected urban corridor, rather than being confined to an individual city.

“The key signal from Maharashtra is not a sudden spike, but persistence. When Dengue activity continues across a connected urban corridor for 16 consecutive weeks, it indicates that the underlying transmission pressure remains active. This calls for sustained vigilance through the monsoon, particularly as several febrile illnesses can present with similar symptoms,” said Dr Sonal Saxena, Director, Lab Operations, Redcliffe Labs.

The sustained activity comes as Maharashtra continues to experience monsoon conditions conducive to mosquito breeding and dengue transmission. 

The 16-week persistence also sets the state's pattern apart from locations where fever activity has been associated primarily with sudden, short-lived increases.

Redcliffe Labs' surveillance also indicates a changing fever profile in Maharashtra, with dengue increasingly competing with typhoid for prominence.

Fever, headache, body ache and fatigue can occur across multiple infections, making it difficult to identify the underlying cause based on symptoms alone. Diagnostic testing, guided by clinical advice and the stage of illness, can help differentiate infections and support appropriate medical management.

The state also remains a concern for leptospirosis, particularly as the monsoon progresses towards the post-monsoon period. Flooding and waterlogging can increase exposure to contaminated water and potentially raise the risk of infection.

The possibility of leptospirosis emerging alongside an existing dengue hotspot adds another layer to Maharashtra's fever surveillance requirements, making continued monitoring important in the coming weeks.

For Maharashtra, the current scenario therefore represents prolonged dengue pressure rather than a single outbreak event. The persistence of activity across Mumbai, Pune and Thane underlines the need for sustained vector-control measures, public awareness and timely medical evaluation of persistent or worsening fever.
