Corbevax is administered through an intramuscular route with two doses scheduled 28 days apart and is stored between 2 degrees celsius to 8 degrees celsius
The central government has placed a purchase order with Biological E for five crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine Corbevax. The HLL Lifecare, a public sector undertaking has issued the supply order in January on behalf of the union health ministry.
The cost implication of Corbevax at the rate of Rs 145 per dose plus GST as applicable comes to Rs 725 plus GST.
“In this regard, it is also stated that Rs 1,500 crore has been released as advance vide sanction order dated June 2, 2021, to HLL Lifecare for procurement of Corbevax from Biological E Limited,” the order stated.
The government is yet to decide on which segment of beneficiaries this new vaccine would be administered.
Earlier in December Biological E had received the Emergency Use Authorisation from Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). At that time the company had stated that it plans to complete production at a rate of 75 million doses per month, anticipating 100+ million doses per month from February 2022. These capacities will enable the Hyderabad-based company to deliver 300 million doses as promised to the Government of India. Soon, the company plans to deliver more than one billion additional doses globally.
Corbevax is administered through an intramuscular route with two doses scheduled 28 days apart and is stored between 2 degrees celsius to 8 degrees celsius. It is presented as 0.5 ml (single dose) and 5 ml (10 doses) vial pack.
Corbevax is a “recombinant protein sub-unit” vaccine, developed from the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein on the virus’s surface combined with Dynavax’s CpG 1018 adjuvant with alum, which helps the body build the immune response against the virus. The vaccine has been developed by Biological E. in collaboration with Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development (Texas Children’s CVD) and Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor) in Houston, Texas.
