Hyderabad emerged as Lonza’s preferred destination after an extensive global evaluation process

Swiss life sciences giant Lonza Group has announced plans to establish a new Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad, a move that reinforces the city’s growing stature as a global life sciences powerhouse.

The announcement followed a recent meeting between company representatives and Telangana’s Minister for Industries & Commerce D Sridhar Babu, along with Shakthi M Nagappan, CEO of Telangana Lifesciences. During the meeting, the delegation formally communicated the company’s decision and outlined its expansion plans.

Headquartered in Basel and founded in 1897, Lonza operates more than 30 facilities worldwide and employs nearly 20,000 people. The company reported sales of CHF 6.5 billion and a Core EBITDA of CHF 2.1 billion in 2025.

Hyderabad emerged as Lonza’s preferred destination after an extensive global evaluation process, with the company citing the city’s deep talent pool, robust infrastructure, and supportive industrial ecosystem as decisive factors.

Over recent months, senior Lonza executives held multiple engagements with Telangana Lifesciences, the state’s Industries & Commerce Department, and other stakeholders—interactions that strengthened the company’s confidence in Hyderabad as the ideal location for the investment.

Sridhar Babu said, “We are thrilled to welcome Lonza’s decision to establish its new centre in Hyderabad. The city continues to stand out as the bright spot for global life sciences investments, driven by its strong scientific ecosystem, digital depth, and world-class manufacturing capabilities.

"Lonza’s investment further strengthens Telangana’s position as a preferred destination for innovation-led growth in the global biopharmaceutical industry. I am delighted that the centre has the potential to create a substantial number of new jobs over the years. We remain committed to supporting such endeavours that promise job creation for our citizens.”

Nagappan, CEO, Telangana Lifesciences, said, “We are delighted that Lonza has chosen Hyderabad for this expansion. This decision marks another significant milestone in the continued expansion of Telangana’s life sciences ecosystem. We look forward to working closely with Lonza to ensure the successful execution of this project and to enable long-term value creation.”

The upcoming GCC is expected to generate high-value employment while further integrating Hyderabad into the global biopharmaceutical value chain.
