Philips has introduced its new helium-free 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) innovation platform, BlueSeal Horizon, at the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2025. The launch marks a significant expansion of Philips’ BlueSeal technology, aimed at eliminating the need for helium refills and vent pipes in MRI systems.

The BlueSeal Horizon 3.0T platform incorporates advanced magnet technology that delivers high-resolution imaging for detailed visualisation of structures such as blood vessels, the brain, muscles, and joints. Designed to support both clinical and research applications, the system captures intricate anatomical details while reducing installation complexity, installation time, and long-term operational risk.

Philips has been advancing helium-free MRI since 2018 and has already deployed more than 2,000 1.5T BlueSeal systems worldwide, saving over six million litres of liquid helium to date. Building on this foundation, the new 3.0T platform integrates next-generation hardware with AI-powered software to enhance speed, precision, and accessibility.

BlueSeal Horizon will introduce multiple AI-driven features, including an expanded SmartPlanning capability for cardiac imaging that automates previously intensive manual steps in as little as 30 seconds. Real-time Scan Preview, enabled by NVIDIA’s accelerated computing and Open Models, is designed to deliver rapid 3D reconstruction, denoising, and artefact reduction, giving radiologists the ability to view and adjust scans instantly. Philips’ SmartSpeed Precise dual-AI technology is expected to triple scan speed while improving image sharpness by up to 80 per cent. The system will also incorporate SmartReading, enabling direct integration of cloud-based AI tools for reading and reporting, particularly in oncology and neurology.

Philips MR Business Leader Ioannis Panagiotelis said: “With BlueSeal Horizon we’re freeing MRI from dependence on a valuable resource the world can’t replace and bringing advanced diagnostic capabilities to people previously out of reach. More than that, BlueSeal Horizon is an entirely new 3.0T innovation platform that combines breakthroughs in hardware with AI-powered software, eliminating the trade-off between imaging speed and precision and improving outcomes for both practitioners and patients.”

The launch follows Philips’ recent introduction of a web-based image management system designed to streamline radiologists’ access to and interpretation of medical images.
