The drugs that received one time exemption to ease shortages include Carboplatin Injection (10 mg/ml), Cisplatin Injection (1 mg/ml), Anti-Tetanus Immunoglobulin 250 IU and Anti-Tetanus Immunoglobulin 500 IU
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has initiated action in 2,737 cases of drug overcharging while also approving a one-time 50% increase in the ceiling prices of four essential medicines to address critical supply shortages,.
The information was provided by Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Anupriya Patel in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on July 31, 2026.
Patel informed that during the past year, NPPA approved a one-time 50% increase in the ceiling prices of Carboplatin Injection (10 mg/ml), Cisplatin Injection (1 mg/ml), Anti-Tetanus Immunoglobulin 250 IU and Anti-Tetanus Immunoglobulin 500 IU after receiving feedback from public health authorities and manufacturers regarding severe shortages of these medicines.
"NPPA continuously monitors the availability of medicines, including generic drugs, across the country. Whenever reports of shortages are received through state authorities, Price Monitoring and Resource Units, or pharmaceutical companies, the regulator coordinates with manufacturers and state governments to restore supplies," said Minister.
As per Minister, the regulator also continues to enforce the provisions of the Drugs (Prices Control) Order (DPCO), 2013. As of March 31, 2026, NPPA had initiated action in 2,737 overcharging cases, with demand notices issued to companies found violating price control norms. "However, the authority does not maintain state-wise records of such cases," she clarified.
