Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for greater global ambition in India’s pharmaceutical sector, urging Indian drugmakers to build internationally recognised brands and secure a place among the world’s top five pharmaceutical companies.

Addressing the nation from the Red Fort in New Delhi on the occasion of India’s 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Modi said India had made significant progress in the pharmaceutical sector but stressed that the country must now aim higher on the global stage.

He said the need of the hour was for one or two Indian pharmaceutical companies to emerge among the world’s top five, signalling the government’s expectation of greater global scale, innovation and brand recognition from the Indian pharma industry.

The Prime Minister also called for a broader push to create globally recognised Indian brands across sectors. He said Indian consulting and accounting firms should aspire to rank among the world’s leading firms, while Indian technology companies should aim for global leadership.

Calling for the creation of brands that attract the world, Modi said Indian brands should become a strong representation of the country and strengthen India’s identity as a global destination.

The remarks come as India’s pharmaceutical industry continues to expand its global footprint, particularly in generic medicines, vaccines and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The Prime Minister’s call for Indian companies to enter the global top five, however, places a greater emphasis on moving beyond manufacturing scale towards globally competitive innovation, brands and companies.
