The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) has launched the India Pharma Archives, a digital repository aimed at preserving and documenting more than a century of India’s pharmaceutical industry and making its institutional history accessible to future generations.
The initiative builds on the landmark coffee-table book The Alchemy of Cure, released earlier this year, and expands the effort into a searchable collection of historical material from across the pharmaceutical ecosystem.
The archive brings together company histories, archival documents, films and historical footage, interview transcripts, oral histories and industry timelines.
It currently spans the period from 1901 to 2025, featuring more than 250 video stories, profiles of over 30 industry leaders and nearly 1,000 documents and resources, along with rare films and historical footage.
The initiative seeks to capture the evolution of an industry that has helped establish India as the “Pharmacy of the World”, with Indian pharmaceutical companies supplying medicines to more than 200 countries.
Dr Sharvil Patel, MD, Zydus Lifesciences and President, IPA, said the Indian pharmaceutical industry represents a story of science, entrepreneurship and global impact.
“The India Pharma Archives celebrates this collective journey and will serve as a platform for new ideas, collaborations, and solutions that address the health challenges of tomorrow,” he said.
Sudarshan Jain, Secretary General, IPA, said the initiative goes beyond preserving historical records and is intended to safeguard the industry's legacy of innovation for future generations.
“India Pharma Archives is not only about preserving history; it is about safeguarding the legacy of innovation for future generations,” Jain said, adding that the archive would serve as an educational resource for students, researchers and policymakers while showcasing the resilience and breakthroughs that have shaped India's pharmaceutical industry.
The IPA said the archive will continue to expand with additional historical material, industry stories and institutional records, creating a comprehensive repository of India's pharmaceutical journey and its contribution to global healthcare.
