Alcon launches new intraocular lens in India promising 94% light utilisation

The launch builds on the established performance of the PanOptix platform

Alcon has unveiled a new intraocular lens technology in India that targets lower light scatter, improved image contrast and greater visual performance for cataract patients.

The global eye care leader says the new lens, Clareon PanOptix Pro, powered by its own ENLIGHTEN NXT Optical technology, delivers the lowest light scatter and highest reported light utilisation of any trifocal IOL.

PanOptix Pro achieves 94% light utilisation, compared with a theoretical maximum of 96% for diffractive optics. The technology is designed to provide more uninterrupted light distribution across distance, intermediate and near vision, alongside a reported 16% increase in optical image contrast between distance and intermediate vision.

The launch builds on the established performance of the PanOptix platform, which Alcon says has demonstrated low visual disturbance, high spectacle independence and strong patient satisfaction.

“As the global leader in eye care, we are committed to improving our technologies to advance patient outcomes through rigorous, world-class R&D,” said Amar Vyas, Country Head, Alcon India.

“Our team looked at hundreds of design options, ultimately landing on a targeted diffractive refinement that helped us recover 50% of light lost to scatter, and reposition it to a beneficial focal point for PanOptix Pro. This allowed for specific enhancements while maintaining the features that have driven the success of PanOptix—the world’s most implanted trifocal IOL.”

The new lens is designed to build on PanOptix's established clinical performance while refining light management and contrast—two key considerations in delivering visual quality after cataract surgery.

Dr. Vaishali Vasavada, an eye specialist, highlighted the potential significance of the advancement for patients seeking greater independence from spectacles.

“PanOptix has been a game-changer in my practice, allowing me to reliably offer many of my patients complete freedom from glasses after cataract surgery,” said Dr. Vaishali Vasavada.

“I was excited to learn that Alcon evolved this leading technology for less light scatter and more light utilization. My early patient results with PanOptix Pro support that this advancement builds on the well-established performance of PanOptix.”
