Global healthcare investment firm OrbiMed has raised $3 billion in commitments across two new private equity funds, targeting life sciences innovation in the United States, Europe and Asia.
The fundraising comprises OrbiMed Private Investments X, which secured more than $1.9 billion for U.S. and European life sciences venture capital opportunities, and OrbiMed Asia Partners VI, which raised over $1 billion for healthcare growth equity and venture capital investments across Asia.
Both funds will target companies spanning biopharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics and technology-enabled healthcare services, with a focus on building leading healthcare businesses.
“There has never been a more exciting time to invest in life sciences innovation,” said Carl Gordon, a managing partner of OrbiMed. “AI, a proliferation of new therapeutic modalities and China’s emergence as a biotechnology powerhouse are expanding the opportunities to develop transformative treatments. We look forward to helping entrepreneurs turn these advances into leading healthcare companies.”
OrbiMed’s latest fundraising comes as advances in artificial intelligence, emerging therapeutic technologies and China’s expanding biotechnology sector create new opportunities for healthcare investors. The firm said its funds would back entrepreneurs seeking to translate scientific and technological breakthroughs into leading healthcare companies.
The firm is led by 20 partners and supported by more than 150 professionals with expertise spanning company incubation, strategy, operations and finance. It operates from 12 global locations across key healthcare markets.
Investors in the two funds include medical institutions, university endowments, foundations, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and family offices, reflecting a broad institutional and private investor base.
“We are grateful for the continued support of our many long-standing investors,” said Carter Neild, a managing partner of OrbiMed. “We will work tirelessly over the coming years to meet their high expectations.”
