Veteran health innovation and policy leader to drive biotechnology innovation, startup growth and commercialization of indigenous technologies
Dr. Dhananjay Kumar Tiwary has taken additional charge as the Managing Director (MD) at Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC).
Dr. Tiwary is a distinguished scientist and currently serves as Advisor (Scientist G) at the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.
In his current role at DBT, Dr. Tiwary oversees advanced research and innovation initiatives in emerging areas such as genome engineering, artificial intelligence for healthcare, and next-generation biotechnology platforms. He has played a significant role in shaping national health technology innovation policies aimed at ensuring affordable, equitable and accessible healthcare solutions for diverse populations.
With extensive experience spanning biotechnology innovation, health technology, policy development, emerging technologies and international scientific collaborations, he brings a strong strategic vision for advancing India's innovation ecosystem.
Dr. Tiwary has also made notable contributions to strengthening India's global scientific partnerships. He previously served as Science Counsellor at the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., and headed the Global Innovations Directorate at DBT, where he was instrumental in fostering international collaborations and advancing India's biotechnology agenda on the global stage.
Academically, Dr. Tiwary holds a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and a Master's degree in Chemistry from the University of Delhi. His research interests include applied chemistry, food safety, health technology policy and innovation-driven public health solutions.
