Natco Pharma has invested an additional $14 million in eGenesis Inc., a US-based biotechnology company developing genome-engineered organs for transplantation, strengthening its exposure to the emerging field of xenotransplantation.

The investment is being made through convertible promissory notes by Natco Pharma’s wholly owned subsidiaries. Natco Pharma (Canada) Inc. will invest $9.5 million, while Natco Pharma South Africa Proprietary Limited will invest $4.5 million.

The notes carry an 8% annual compounded interest rate.

The latest transaction takes Natco Pharma’s total investment in eGenesis to $22 million. Natco had previously invested $8 million in eGenesis in 2024 through preferred stock.

Cambridge, Massachusetts-based eGenesis is developing transplantable organs using its EGEN genome-engineering platform, which is designed to address cross-species molecular incompatibilities and viral risks associated with transplantation of animal organs into humans.

The company is pursuing programmes in kidney transplantation, acute liver failure and heart transplantation.

The investment comes as eGenesis advances its clinical-stage xenotransplantation programmes. In March 2024, the company conducted the world's first transplant of a genetically engineered pig kidney into a living human patient under the US Food and Drug Administration's Expanded Access pathway.

Natco has previously described eGenesis as one of its most significant innovative investments. In a May 2026 earnings discussion, Natco Managing Director Rajeev Nannapaneni said the company was particularly excited about eGenesis and its progress in genetically engineered pig kidney transplantation.

The latest investment also signals Natco's continued move beyond its traditional generic pharmaceutical business into innovative healthcare technologies, cell and gene therapy and regenerative medicine. The company has also invested in Cellogen Therapeutics, Eyestem Research and Stero Therapeutics as part of its broader innovation portfolio.

The transaction was disclosed by Natco Pharma on August 25, 2026, under its regulatory filings.

Dealroom reported the $14 million financing as a sizeable convertible deal for a pre-revenue US health startup, highlighting the growing investor interest in technologies aimed at addressing the global shortage of transplantable organs.
