NHA integrates Google’s Gemma 4 AI into Aarogya Setu 2.0 to digitize health records

The initiative enables users to convert unstructured medical records into standardized digital health profiles while supporting interoperability under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission

Google has announced that India’s National Health Authority (NHA) is using its open-source Gemma 4 AI model and Medical Data Toolkit to power the newly launched Aarogya Setu 2.0 app. 

The platform processes unstructured medical reports—including text and images—to create comprehensive digital health profiles, giving users a unified view of their medical history.

The AI-powered toolkit automatically identifies different types of health records, extracts key clinical information such as laboratory test names, methods, and results, and converts the data into Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) format. 

This standardized approach enables seamless sharing of health information across hospitals and healthcare providers while aligning with interoperability standards under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).

Google has also open-sourced the Medical Data Toolkit at no cost, allowing developers and healthcare organizations to build applications that digitize legacy medical records and accelerate digital health innovation. 

Initially optimized for laboratory reports and clinical observations, the toolkit aims to reduce barriers to health-tech development while supporting India's expanding Digital Public Infrastructure for healthcare.

Preeti Lobana, Vice President and Country Manager, Google India, said the initiative empowers citizens to take greater control of their health journeys while fostering innovation across India's digital health ecosystem. She added that Google remains committed to supporting India's healthcare transformation through advanced AI technologies.
