Roche has secured the CE Mark for its cobas smart e immunoanalyser, a compact diagnostic platform designed to bring high-quality immunoassay testing to smaller hospitals, local laboratories and resource-constrained healthcare facilities.
The standalone system occupies less than one square metre and has a planned menu of more than 100 high-medical-value assays, covering critical disease areas including cardiometabolic conditions, oncology and infectious diseases. More than 90% of Roche immunoassays have reaction times of 18 minutes or less, potentially helping local laboratories deliver faster diagnostic results and reduce dependence on external testing facilities.
“For smaller hospitals and laboratories, maintaining central-lab quality has traditionally meant outsourcing tests,” said Matt Sause, CEO of Roche Diagnostics. “The cobas smart e immunoanalyser fits on a benchtop, bringing Roche's immunoassay standards directly into these care settings. This means our cobas® immunoassay solutions now span the full range of healthcare settings while delivering consistent high-quality results, ensuring patients get timely, accurate answers, no matter where they live."
The launch comes as healthcare systems worldwide grapple with mounting workforce shortages and growing pressure to deliver timely diagnostic services. A projected global shortfall of 11 million health workers by 2030 underscores the scale of the challenge.4
Roche says the new analyser is designed to ease the burden on laboratory personnel through guided, step-by-step workflows and minimal maintenance requirements. The system needs just one minute of daily operator intervention and can reduce hands-on maintenance efforts by up to two-thirds compared with previous-generation platforms.
By simplifying routine operations, the platform aims to help smaller laboratories improve productivity without compromising testing quality.
Beyond its size, the cobas smart e immunoanalyser is engineered to operate in settings where conventional laboratory infrastructure can be a barrier to diagnostic access.
An integrated water tank, compatibility with standard power supplies and dust-protection features reduce reliance on specialised infrastructure. These design elements are intended to support testing in rural clinics and resource-constrained facilities, where environmental and operational limitations can disrupt laboratory services.
The system could also help smaller facilities reduce the time and cost associated with sending patient samples to central laboratories by bringing more testing capabilities in-house.
The cobas smart e immunoanalyser expands Roche's cobas immunoassay portfolio alongside the cobas e 402 and cobas e 801 analytical units, which process up to 60, 120 and 300 tests per hour, respectively.
Together, the systems are designed to serve laboratories of different sizes, from small local clinics to high-volume hospital facilities. They use the same universal reagents and Elecsys® technology, supporting comparability of clinical results across decentralised sites and central laboratories.
