Merck has expanded its manufacturing facility in Jigani, Bengaluru, with an investment of approximately €13 million, strengthening local production of critical chemistry and biology materials for India’s growing life sciences sector and customers across the Asia-Pacific region.

The expansion will add biological buffer manufacturing to the site’s existing chemistry capabilities, creating an integrated offering for customers in research, diagnostics, biotechnology and biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

“India is emerging as an increasingly important hub for life science innovation and manufacturing,” said Dhananjay Singh, Managing Director, Life Science business of Merck, India.

“Merck is investing about €13 million in its Jigani site to strengthen regional manufacturing and expand biology and chemistry capabilities across India and the Asia-Pacific region. This investment will reinforce our global supply chain and support the ‘Make in India’ initiative.”

Singh also acknowledged the continued collaboration from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Heavy Water Board, Government of Karnataka and Invest India.

The Jigani facility will manufacture biological buffers and raw materials for diagnostic applications used in DNA research, cell culture, diagnostics and drug manufacturing. Production will take place locally under temperature-controlled conditions, helping improve supply reliability, reduce import dependence and enable faster responses to customer requirements.

The expanded site will support customers across the life sciences value chain—from research and development and scale-up to commercial production—while reinforcing Merck’s “in-region, for-region” approach to supply and access across key markets.

The facility has also reserved 34% of its site area as greenbelt, including trees and vegetation, as part of its environmental protection and sustainable operations initiatives.

Amardeep Singh Bhatia, IAS, Secretary to the Government of India, DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said the expansion reflected the potential of India-Germany industrial cooperation.

Alexandre Callegaro, Minister Counsellor, Head of the Department for Economic and Global Affairs, German Embassy, New Delhi, said the expansion would strengthen Merck’s Life Science presence in India by scaling up advanced materials production capabilities supporting pharmaceutical research and semiconductor manufacturing ecosystems.
