Loopworm, an India-based insect biotechnology company, announced findings from an independent Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) showing that its silkworm-derived ingredients for animal and pet nutrition are net carbon negative, removing more carbon than they emit.
According to the assessment, producing 1 kg of Loopworm’s silkworm-based ingredients results in the removal of 2.56 kg of CO₂ equivalent on a cradle-to-gate basis, underscoring their potential as a sustainable alternative in the global feed industry.
The study was conducted by PwC India in line with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 protocols. It evaluated the company’s flagship products, LoopMeal and LoopOil, across 18 environmental impact categories using the SimaPro LCA tool and the ReCiPe midpoint methodology.
The analysis benchmarked Loopworm’s products against conventional protein and oil sources such as soymeal, soy oil, fishmeal and fish oil—ingredients typically associated with positive greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation pressures, and marine ecosystem stress. The findings indicate that LoopMeal and LoopOil perform favourably across a wide spectrum of sustainability metrics, while maintaining digestibility, palatability, and positive health outcomes.
The results come at a time when feed manufacturers across pet food, aquaculture, and livestock sectors are under increasing pressure to demonstrate environmental accountability across supply chains. Loopworm positions its offerings as a nutritionally viable and environmentally sustainable alternative that can support evolving regulatory and reporting requirements.
Commenting on the development, Abhi Gawri, Co-Founder and COO, said the company aimed to “quantitatively prove” its environmental impact, enabling customers to future-proof formulations, strengthen Scope 3 reporting, and align with global sustainability certifications.
With an existing presence in markets such as Europe and Japan, Loopworm said the LCA findings provide audit-ready data to support its international expansion and compliance with stringent regulatory frameworks governing feed ingredients.
