Advisory from Apollo Spectra Hospitals highlights hydration, nutrition, and screening as key preventive measures
On World Liver Day, Apollo Spectra Hospitals, Bengaluru, issued a seasonal health advisory emphasising the importance of liver care during the summer months, cautioning that rising temperatures, dehydration and lifestyle-related metabolic risks can strain liver health.
Doctors noted that individuals with obesity, diabetes and other metabolic conditions may be particularly vulnerable during this period. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to dehydration and reduced blood volume, potentially affecting circulation and metabolic processes. Under such stress, the liver may work harder to maintain normal metabolic functions.
Commenting on the seasonal risks, Dr Amit G Yelsangikar, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Apollo Spectra Bengaluru, said, “Higher temperatures during summer can increase the risk of dehydration, which may affect blood circulation and liver metabolism. Maintaining adequate hydration and balanced nutrition is important to support liver function, particularly among individuals with metabolic risk factors.”
Metabolic liver conditions are emerging as a significant public health concern in India. A large cohort study published in The Lancet Regional Health – Southeast Asia, under the Phenome India initiative, analysed data from over 7,700 adults across 27 cities and highlighted the growing burden of Metabolically Associated Steatotic Liver Disease.
Global estimates suggest that MASLD affects nearly 25–50% of adults, with higher prevalence among those with obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and sedentary lifestyles.
Doctors cautioned that early signs of liver strain are often non-specific, including fatigue, nausea, reduced appetite and abdominal discomfort, and may go unnoticed until the disease progresses.
“Liver-related concerns may not always present with clear symptoms in the early stages. That is why timely screening, healthy food habits and attention to metabolic health are important for prevention and early management, “said Dr Sunil Kumar B Alur, Consultant Surgeon at Apollo Spectra Bengaluru.
