15-year-old Mohit became the youngest recipient of a heart transplant in Gujarat when doctors at the CIMS Multi Super Speciality Hospital in Ahmedabad successfully completed a heart transplant surgery.  This is the 18th heart transplant to be performed at the hospital.

The transplanted heart belonged to 14-year-old Surat resident Dharmik Kakadiya, whose family donated his heart and other organs after being declared brain dead.

“Mohit is the youngest patient in Gujarat to have received a heart transplant and is stable at present. It is always difficult to get the right match for a paediatric patient, as the size of the body and heart have to match. Luckily, Mohit was able to get an exact match,” said Dr. Dhiren Shah, Director and Chief of cardiothoracic and heart transplant department at CIMS Multi Super Specialty Hospital, who led the surgery.

Moreover, Mohit comes from a financially weak family, and funds for the operation were raised by crowdfunding along with CIMS Multi Super Specialty Hospital.

The heart transplant procedure was completed in three hours and 45 minutes, which included one-and-a-half hours to transport the heart from Surat to Ahmedabad via a chartered flight.

“All preparations were over even as the heart was on its way to Ahmedabad, which allowed us to complete the transplant procedure in just two over hours after the heart reached the hospital. It is well documented that heart transplant within four hours leads to good results,” said Dr. Dhaval Naik, cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon, CIMS Multi Super Specialty Hospital.
